By understanding what something is not, we can better understand what it is.
Mammath is not:
-
a teacher replacement
-
a textbook replacement
-
an edutainment platform
-
a learning management system
Our focus is providing granular topic assessments (quizzes) coupled with visual tools that help teachers teach. Effective teaching requires adapting in the classroom to student data so that students are met in their Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). In a classroom with diverse readiness to learn, this requires Differentiated Instruction. It is up to the teacher to manage the strategies (e.g. Tiered lessons, adaptive groups with targetted instruction, etc.). Mammath provides the data needed to target interventions and track progress in the classroom.
Physical and digital textbooks are valuable tools that provide excellent reference materials and structure for a topic. With vast quantities of questions that progress through each topic, they are important for students to practice, building fluency with new skills and understanding of new concepts. The granular nature of Mammath assessments complements these existing resources perfectly. Different books may sequence or combine specific topics differently. By having narrowly-scoped assessments, they can easily be matched to particular chapters of any book.
Established services like Kahoot & Blooket can provide positive student engagement in the classroom. They are popular with students. They also allow teachers to make their own quizzes that meet specific needs, reflect thir own personality or the interests of the cohort. Competition is incorporated into these activities which can provide motivation for many students. Of course, competition can also be de-motivating for students that aren't as fast and rarely if ever reach the podium. Mammath delibertely avoids competitive attributes. We also don't present a timer. Our focus is to determine what a student knows, not how quickly they can process and respond.
Mammath is built as a platform to provide timely data, not timeless data. Hence we shouldn't be confused with some of the functions of a Learning Management System. We don't intend to provide archival records indefinitely into the future. If you or your institution needs to capture data for their reporting needs, we provide easy export of data in csv file format that you can integrate into your own system.
